I know, I know, I’m not quite done the Firefly cross-stitch project yet and I’m not allowed to take on other big projects until I am. But I’ve been thinking about what I want to do for my next quilt. My crafting style is pretty much implementation of other people’s patterns, but after finishing BSG Season 3, I started wanting to do something with Starbuck’s mandala.
Autumn from Geek Six has done some beautiful repaintings of the mandala, like this one on a laundry room wall. I did a small version in colored pencils to add to my geeky workspace and that got me wondering if maybe I could do something more with it…like quilt it.
I had plain fabric in blue, red, and yellow, so I took a crack at how putting it together might work. Kind of a quick job so I didn’t pay as much attention to loose threads, etc. I think I’d have to do more planning beforehand & be sure it’s something I want to do…but it might work.
Note: The proportions are off but that’s because I was using scraps & didn’t have enough of the blue.
What do you think? Good idea for a project? Quilting not the right medium?

I like the idea. I wonder if it would work better with even smaller pieces, kind of like a mosaic.

I think you’re onto something with that. I was thinking bigger pieces like brush strokes, but it’s harder to get them to lie right.

Ooh, I agree with Rosalind. Especially lots of different patterns of yellow / blue / red within each ring.

I’ve got nothing. Zip. Because when you say Starbucks, I think coffee, and somehow, I don’t think that is what you’re referring to. Something to do with BSG, I presume…Is that Battlestar Galactica? What’s this mandala thing? Sorry, you can tell I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore. I blame my semi-homelessness phase. lol
